The Omega Ratio and its Effects on Health

Obesity is a growing problem, often accompanied by diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. A major factor that can promote obesity is an imbalance between omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids.

Important Facts

  • Omega-6 vs. Omega-3: Omega-6 is found in vegetable oils (e.g. sunflower, corn oil), while Omega-3 is found in fatty fish and flaxseed.

  • The problem: The Western diet often has an omega-6:omega-3 ratio of 15:1 – the optimal ratio would be 3:1.

  • Consequences of the imbalance: Too much omega-6 promotes inflammation, disrupts fat metabolism and promotes obesity. Omega-3, on the other hand, has an anti-inflammatory effect and supports fat loss.

  • Solution: Reduce omega-6 rich foods and increase omega-3 intake through fish, plant sources or supplements.

Conclusion: A balanced omega ratio can reduce inflammation and support metabolism to effectively combat obesity.
